Want to write a letter to your neighbours about noise or another nuisance, but not sure how to start? With this free message generator you can create a friendly first letter in two minutes. Choose the topic, fill in a few details and then edit the text however you like. Nothing is stored.

How the message generator works

  • Choose the topic. From loud music and barking dogs to wood smoke, leaks and a car in your parking space.

  • Describe what you notice. When it happens and how it affects you, for example that you're not sleeping well.

  • Choose one or two requests. Starting small works best. A neighbour who only needs to change one thing is more likely to say yes.

  • Copy or print your letter. You can edit the text yourself first.

Tips for a good first letter

Write about what you notice, not about what the other person is doing wrong. Assume your neighbours don't know: that's usually true. Keep it short, mention one or two specific requests and offer to talk it over. Don't send the letter while you're angry. Read it through again the next day.

When is it better not to write a letter?

If you're being threatened or intimidated, or you can hear that someone is in danger, don't write to the other person yourself. In an emergency, call 999. Worried that someone is being abused at home, but there's no immediate danger? Call the National Domestic Abuse Helpline on 0808 2000 247 (free, 24 hours a day). For intimidation, it's best to call the police on 101, report it to your landlord, managing agent or council, and keep a log.

Frequently asked questions

Is the message generator really free? Yes. You can create as many letters as you like, without an account.

What happens to the details I enter? Nothing. Everything stays in your own browser. We don't store or send anything.

What if my neighbours don't respond? Choose "No" when asked whether this is the first time. You'll get a second letter that is clearer and suggests community mediation. If you'd also like follow-up letters and a log, take a look at the pack for your situation.
