Why CalmNotes?

Raising a problem with your neighbours can be difficult. You want to be clear about what you are experiencing while treating your relationship with care.

CalmNotes was created to make that first step easier: calm, clear and respectful.

Informed by practical experience

CalmNotes draws on experience in advising on neighbour problems and community mediation. The tone, timing and structure of a message can make an important difference.

That experience informs practical tools for different situations: sample messages for several stages of contact, background information, an overview of relevant considerations and an incident diary. The English materials are being adapted for use in the United Kingdom, with differences between its four nations identified where relevant.

Support for your next step

Adapt each message to your circumstances and keep a record of events. If the problem continues, follow-up messages and the incident diary help you maintain an overview.

When is this approach suitable?

These tools are intended for situations where contact with your neighbours feels appropriate and safe. CalmNotes does not provide legal advice or replace an individual professional assessment.

If there are threats, violence or immediate danger, a message to your neighbour is not the right first step. Seek appropriate help. In a UK emergency, call 999.
