Wood smoke
Wood smoke becomes a problem when smoke and smells from a wood burner, open fire or fire pit get into a neighbour’s home or garden. It happens mostly in built-up areas or when there’s little wind, so the smoke lingers and drifts to nearby homes. For the person lighting the fire it’s often about warmth and cosiness; for the people next door it can be a real problem.
You might notice the smell of smoke in the house, struggle to air your home, or be unable to use the garden or balcony for a while. Wood smoke can also affect health. Fine particles and smoke can irritate the eyes and airways, cause breathlessness or headaches, and make existing conditions such as asthma worse, especially with regular or prolonged exposure.
How bad it is depends on things like wind direction, how the fire is used and what is burned. Usually it isn’t deliberate: people simply don’t realise, for example burning in unsuitable weather or using wood that isn’t dry enough.
