Wood smoke from neighbours: local rules and practical steps
Smoke from a wood stove, fireplace or fire pit can enter your home or hang in the garden. How do you discuss the nuisance, what can you agree on together and what step is appropriate if the smoke returns?
Record where and when smoke reaches you. Several homes or outdoor fires may contribute, so keep visible sources separate from suspected ones.
This guide applies to England.
When and where do you notice the wood smoke?
Record when and where the smoke or smell enters and what you can see from your own home. Keep observations separate from assumptions about the source.
Why might smoke linger near your home?
Wind and the position of windows, buildings and the fire or chimney affect where smoke travels. Note the conditions rather than diagnosing the appliance yourself. Keep necessary ventilation working.
What can you do first yourself and together?
First identify whether the issue is a stove or chimney, a fire pit or a garden bonfire. Ask for a suitable change or inspection rather than assuming that moving the fire is always possible or safe.
What tools and adjustments can help?
For an appliance or flue, ask the owner to consult a qualified installer. For an outdoor fire, discuss avoiding use when smoke enters neighbouring homes. Never alter someone else’s stove or flue.
Look at wind, location and timing
Note the wind direction, affected windows and the length of each episode. If smoke enters only when a particular window is open, test airing the room at another time while keeping essential ventilation in use. Discuss whether the burner can avoid the times when smoke reaches your home most often.
Reduce exposure while you seek a solution
Wood smoke contains fine particles. If smoke is entering a room, use a less affected space if possible. Seek medical advice if respiratory symptoms persist or worsen.
Which rules apply in England?
Ask your council if you live in a smoke control area. Rules there concern chimney smoke, authorised fuels and exempt appliances. For a stove or chimney problem, seek advice from a qualified installer.
What if the wood smoke keeps coming back?
A smoke control area and a smoke-nuisance complaint are different routes. Serious repeated smoke may warrant council investigation even outside a smoke control area.
Ask the council about your address
Send environmental health the dates, duration, affected rooms, weather and what you actually saw. Ask which reporting route applies to the source. Keep any installer findings with the record.

A practical conversation and follow-up
“On the last two calm evenings, smoke came into our bedroom for about an hour. We think it may coincide with the fire, but aren’t certain. Could we compare the times and discuss a change or an installer’s check?”
For a stove, agree who seeks advice and when. For an outdoor fire, agree an alternative before lighting; do not move a burning fire pit. Review the result in similar conditions.

What can filtration realistically do?
A suitably sized particle air cleaner may reduce some airborne particles as an extra measure, but it does not remove the smoke source or all gases. Check clean-air delivery for the room and follow filter-maintenance instructions. Do not use fragrance as evidence that the air is clean or block essential ventilation.

Keep the next step manageable
Use the free incident diary for a few representative observations, any agreement and improvements. If you need outside help, see Who can help. State what happened, what you have tried and what you are asking the recipient to do. You do not have to keep approaching the neighbour if contact feels unsafe.
