Cannabis smoke from neighbours: causes, solutions and agreements

A smell of cannabis or smoke entering your bedroom or balcony can affect your rest. How can you describe it neutrally, reduce the disturbance and ask for appropriate help?

Focus on what you notice, where it enters and its effect. A smell alone does not identify who is responsible. Leave room for an explanation and an inspection of the airflow.

This guide applies to England.

When and where do you notice the smell?

Record when and where the smoke or smell enters and what you can see from your own home. Keep observations separate from assumptions about the source.

How does the smell get in and what does it do to you?

Smoke can travel through open windows, shared ventilation or gaps around services. Record the wind direction if it appears to come from outdoors. Keep required ventilation working.

What can you do first yourself and together?

Choose a safe, calm time to describe one example and ask for cooperation. If contact feels unsafe, ask the landlord or managing agent to handle the report.

What tools and adjustments can help?

A building professional can investigate suspected gaps or shared ducts. Keep ventilation working. Fragrance masks a smell rather than solving its source.

Find where the odour enters

Compare what happens near the window, front door and shared ventilation. Write down whether you noticed a smell, saw smoke or both. Ask the managing agent to check shared ducts or gaps if the pattern points to the building. Keep ventilation open.

Limit exposure in the affected room

If smoke reaches a bedroom or work area, use another room temporarily if you can. Fragrance will only cover the smell. Get medical advice if respiratory symptoms persist or worsen.

Which rules apply in England?

Cannabis is a Class B controlled drug in the UK. An odour does not identify the person or establish an offence. For smoke entering rented housing, tell the landlord or managing agent what you observed.

What if the smell keeps returning?

Ask for a check of the route and explain the impact on you. If there are separate safety or crime concerns, use the appropriate police reporting route.

Keep the request about the nuisance

Keep building investigation, a request to reduce smoke and any separate safety or crime concern distinct. Send the landlord dates, rooms and the suspected entry route. If you have a separate concern about danger or crime, use the appropriate police reporting route rather than trying to investigate it yourself.

A neutral opening and a small trial

“Over the last few evenings, a strong smell that seems like cannabis has entered our bedroom near the shared vent. I don’t know exactly where it comes from. Have you noticed it too? Could we ask the manager to check the route and see what would reduce it?”

For the trial, record the date, room, suspected entry point, window position and how long the smell lasts. Note improvements too. You do not need to watch the neighbour or make continuous recordings.

What can filtration realistically do?

A suitably sized particle air cleaner may reduce some airborne particles as an extra measure, but it does not remove the smoke source or all gases. Check clean-air delivery for the room and follow filter-maintenance instructions. Do not use fragrance as evidence that the air is clean or block essential ventilation.

US Environmental Protection Agency — Technical guide to home air cleaners explains these limitations. This is technical information from a US source, not guidance on English legal rights.

Keep the next step manageable

Use the free incident diary for a few representative observations, any agreement and improvements. If you need outside help, see Who can help. State what happened, what you have tried and what you are asking the recipient to do. You do not have to keep approaching the neighbour if contact feels unsafe.
