Tobacco smoke from neighbours: causes, solutions and agreements
Cigarette smoke entering your bedroom or lingering in the hallway can affect your comfort at home. How can you find its route, try solutions together and get help?
This guide concerns tobacco smoke from neighbours, for example cigarettes or cigars. It offers practical steps for describing the disturbance and making a realistic request. Start by investigating what you notice, without assuming who is responsible.
When and where do you smell smoke?
Record when and where the smoke or smell enters and what you can see from your own home. Keep observations separate from assumptions about the source.
How does smoke enter, and how does it affect you?
Smoke can travel through open windows, shared ventilation or gaps around services. Record the wind direction if it appears to come from outdoors. Keep required ventilation working.
What can you do first, on your own and together?
Start with a specific observation and ask whether a change in location, timing or use could help. If direct contact is unsafe, use the landlord or local reporting route.
What tools and adjustments could help?
Ask a qualified person to inspect shared ducts or gaps. A fragrance or air purifier does not remove the source. If smoke affects your health, seek medical advice.
Check the route into your home
Note whether the smell starts when a particular window is open or when a shared extractor is running. If it comes through a vent, skirting board or service duct, ask the landlord or building manager to inspect the route. Keep required ventilation and fire doors working.
Reduce exposure to tobacco smoke
If you can, use a room where the smoke is less noticeable while the source is being investigated. Air fresheners can mask the smell. They do not remove exposure. Seek medical advice if breathing symptoms persist or worsen.
Which rules apply in England?
If tobacco smoke enters from another home, check the tenancy or lease and ask the landlord or managing agent to investigate its route. Report any suspected defects in the shared ventilation or building fabric.
What if the smoke keeps returning?
Keep a short diary and ask for a building inspection or a change of smoking location. Consult NHS guidance on reducing exposure.
Ask for a specific follow-up
Ask your neighbour to try smoking farther from the shared entrance or your window. Agree when to check whether it helped. If smoke still enters your home, give the managing agent dates, rooms and the suspected entry point, and ask when the inspection can take place.

A calm opening and a smoke-route record
“Over the last few evenings, cigarette smoke has entered our bedroom near the window facing the shared entrance. Could we try a smoking spot farther away and check whether that helps? If it continues, I’d like to ask the manager to inspect the route.”
For a few representative occasions, record the time, affected room, window position, suspected entry point and duration. Note whether the change helped. Share the practical pattern rather than monitoring who smokes.
What can filtration realistically do?
A suitably sized particle air cleaner may reduce some airborne particles as an extra measure, but it does not remove the smoke source or all gases. Check clean-air delivery for the room and follow filter-maintenance instructions. Do not use fragrance as evidence that the air is clean or block essential ventilation.

Keep the next step manageable
Use the free incident diary for a few representative observations, any agreement and improvements. If you need outside help, see Who can help. State what happened, what you have tried and what you are asking the recipient to do. You do not have to keep approaching the neighbour if contact feels unsafe.
