Noise from neighbours’ visitors: occasions, causes and agreements
Repeated late doorbell ringing, loud conversations or people waiting in a shared entrance can disturb your rest. How can you discuss the effect without objecting to visitors themselves?
Identify whether the problem happens on arrival, during the visit or when guests leave. Ask for a change to that part of the visit.
The rules and services in this guide apply to England.
At what point does the nuisance occur?
Is it about the arrival, long talks, walking on the stairs, conversations in the home or the departure? Record a few moments and the place where you hear it. A busy evening may require a different agreement than ringing every morning.
Stick to your perception. “Yesterday visitors were talking in the porch at half past one” says more than “the wrong people are always coming”. The question of who someone invites is separate from the behaviour causing the nuisance.
What can exacerbate the problem?
Shared entrances, stairs and access balconies can carry voices into nearby homes. The host may not realise how clearly you hear conversations or the entrance door closing.
Name the effect on your own day, for example that you wake up or cannot use a passage pleasantly. Ask what the resident knows about the course of the visit. The goal is a workable agreement on behaviour.
What can you do first yourself and together?
- Choose the recurring moment. Start with the part of the visit that is most disturbing.
- Discuss it with the resident. They can inform guests and make arrangements with them.
- Ask for one clear change. Consider waiting indoors, leaving quietly or avoiding conversations outside a bedroom window.
- Check after an agreed period. Discuss whether the change helps and what needs attention.
A calm opening
“On the last two evenings, your guests were still talking in the entrance after midnight. We could hear them clearly from the bedroom. Could you ask them to say goodbye indoors and leave quietly?”
Use only examples that you have experienced yourself. Ask for help if contact feels unsafe.
What arrangements and tools can help?
Arrival and waiting
Ask the host to give guests the correct bell or agreed contact details and, where practical, have them wait inside. Keep the entrance secure; never prop open a fire door.
Talking in another place
Find out if a conversation or smoking break can take place further from your window. Make a separate request about smoke if that plays. The guide on tobacco smoke can then provide additional information.
Doors and common area
If the entrance door itself slams, report it to the building manager. Leave fire-door closers, latches and other safety hardware to competent people. A request to guests and a door repair may both be needed.
A short agreement for guests
A short guest message could say: “Please use our bell, wait inside, say goodbye before leaving and close the shared door gently. Please keep the entrance clear.” Adapt it to the building’s access and fire-safety rules.
Which rules and agreements are relevant?
In England, the council can assess serious or persistent noise under the statutory nuisance framework. The time, duration, frequency and local circumstances all matter. Check your tenancy or lease for any building rules.
What if the nuisance keeps coming back?
If you cannot agree a workable change, send a brief diary to your landlord, housing association or managing agent. For serious persistent disturbance, ask the council’s environmental health team what evidence it needs.

Keep the next step manageable
Use the free incident diary for a few representative observations, any agreement and improvements. If you need outside help, see Who can help. State what happened, what you have tried and what you are asking the recipient to do. You do not have to keep approaching the neighbour if contact feels unsafe.
